We’ll spend a day hiking along granite mesas, with spectacular views of Pacific Ocean cliffs on one side and scenic panoramas of Tomales Bay on the other, enjoying the myriad colors and fragrances of spring wildflowers while we scan groups of tule elk cows for glimpses of spotted, nursing babies. During our journey, we’ll explore the role Tule elk played in California ecology for thousands of years, the reasons they nearly vanished forever, and what we can do to help them continue to thrive. The scenery will also likely spark your curiosity about other secrets of the Tomales Point peninsula: Coast Miwok heritage, Gold Rush-era ranching, San Andreas fault geology, raptors, coyotes, native plants and more. Instructed by Frank Binney -This will be a vigorous activity. -Youth, ages 12 and up, are welcome with adult supervision. -If you have any special circumstances or questions, please contact us at fieldinstitute@ptreyes.org.
